Frequently Asked Questions

The E-vignette for Switzerland can be purchased online: Simply enter your license plate, select the vehicle type, pay online, and drive right away; no personal holder information is required. Unlike the traditional sticker vignette, the E-vignette is linked to the license plate (called "control plate" in Switzerland). This means that if the vehicle is changed with the same control plate or in the event of windshield damage, a new E-vignette is not necessary. The E-vignette 2026 is valid from December 1, 2025, to January 31, 2027, on all Swiss motorways and national roads.
Yes, the E-Vignette can also be purchased for vehicles without a standard control plate. It is important that the control plate used is clear and valid. For special control plates, such as dealer or interchangeable plates, you should ensure that the E-Vignette is correctly assigned.
To purchase an E-Vignette, you need the following details:
  • Vehicle category: e.g., car, motorcycle, trailer.
  • Country of registration: The country where the vehicle is registered.
  • Control plate: The official license plate number of the vehicle.
Personal information about the vehicle owner is not required for purchase.
You can check the validity of your E-Vignette online via the BAZG’s Via Portal by entering the country of registration and the control plate number. Note that this check is only possible if the E-Vignette has been designated as "publicly visible."

The Swiss police and the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security conduct spot checks on E-Vignettes by verifying the control plate in their system. Automated control systems are not currently used.
When entering a German license plate to purchase an E-Vignette on swissvignette.ch, you must enter the plate with a hyphen.
No, there are no toll stations on Swiss motorways. The toll is paid through a motorway vignette, which is valid for the entire year.
